The knowledge of innovative materials, production processes and technologies are absolutely essential for designers. New materials and processes replace overpriced, wasteful or obsolete, conventional materials and processes on a regular basis.
Several thousands of years ago, knitted fabrics were already used, produced manually with basic knitting needles. Modern inventions led to a mechanization of this process.
Now, a technology was developed which enables to process knitted textiles in nearly any, basic or complex, three-dimensional shape - called the 3D knitting technology.
This paper is about facts of 3D knitting. It identifies fields of application and varied manufacturing possibilities and delivers technical background information about the knitting process, the machinery and the process of 3D shaping, noteworthy not only for designers.
